Death toll from twin blasts in Pakistan up to 19

Death toll from twin blasts near Shiite mosque in southwest Pakistan rises to 19

QUETTA, Pakistan — Police say the death toll from twin bomb blasts near a Shiite Muslim mosque in southwest Pakistan has risen to 19.

Police officer Fayaz Sumbal says the attack Sunday evening in Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan province, also wounded at least 50 people.

Sumbal says initial reports indicate the first blast was caused by a hand grenade that caused people to run in the direction of the mosque, where a suicide bomber detonated his explosives.

Radical Sunni Muslims have stepped up attacks in the past two years against minority Shiites, whom they consider to be heretics.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. Suspicion will likely fall on the militant group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, which has carried out many attacks against Shiites in Baluchistan.
