SALEM, Mass. — Two men whose boat capsized off the Massachusetts coast are safe after a 14-hour ordeal that ended with them being rescued by a passing fishing boat.

The two New Hampshire men were found Saturday morning off an island in Salem Sound.

WCVB-TV reports George Reynolds, of Derry, and Fred Schaeffer, of Raymond, were found clinging to the multi-hulled boat around daybreak. Reynolds tells the station the men knew their best hope of rescue was to stay with the boat and not panic.

Coast Guard officials tell The Boston Globe the men were able to maneuver a plank over the hulls, allowing them to sit above the chilly waves.

Overnight temperatures Friday were in the high 50s.
