Pilot killed in small plane crash near Oakland County airport

WATERFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Officials say the pilot of a small plane was killed when he crashed near Oakland County International Airport.

Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson’s office said in a news release that a twin-engine Cessna 310 crashed Friday night in a wooded area at the Pontiac Lake State Recreation Area.

The plane caught fire. Waterford Township firefighters extinguished the blaze.

No one else was on board the plane. No one on the ground was injured.

The Oakland County news release says the plane was owned by Royal Air, an air freight and charter company based out of the airport. It was returning to the airport from Atlanta.

The cause of the crash was not yet known. The name of the pilot hasn’t been released.
