Rhode Island gubernatorial candidate discloses fatal crash 25 years ago

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A leading candidate for Rhode Island governor has disclosed that he was responsible for a crash that killed a man 25 years ago.

Cranston Mayor Allan Fung tells The Providence Journal he was an 18-year-old college student in 1989 when he lost consciousness behind the wheel and hit a man who was changing a tire on Interstate 95. He says a grand jury declined to indict him, and he later had his arrest record expunged.

The Journal reports that Fung disclosed the crash to them several years ago when he was running for city council, but the newspaper decided not to report it.

The Republican says he hates discussing it, but he decided to do it now because he worries political opponents will spread the story to hurt his campaign.
