President Obama lunches with Detroit mayor during 3 hours in Mich.; hears city leader's plans

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says President Barack Obama is interested in the city leader’s ideas to create economic opportunities in the city and requested a formal plan within 90 days.

The pair ate lunch Friday in East Lansing before the president signed the federal farm bill at Michigan State University. Duggan declined to share specifics but says his ideas focus on bringing jobs into the city.

Duggan says they ate salmon and rice at the university’s biotechnology institute. Duggan says they ate “healthy” but the mayor still snuck “two cookies on the way out.”

Duggan took office last month and the city is going through the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history.

Last month, Joe Biden ate dinner with Duggan during the vice president’s visit to Detroit for its auto show.
