EPA awards $5 million to fight invasive species

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded 11 grants totaling about $5 million to fight invasive species in the Great Lakes region.

Great Lakes National Program Manager Susan Hedman announced the grants today. She says they’ll fund projects that fight aquatic and terrestrial invasive species already in the region, as well as efforts to prevent new invaders from becoming established.

The grants are being provided under the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, an Obama administration program designed to make progress on long-running ecological problems such as toxic pollution and loss of wildlife habitat.

Since the program began in 2010, the federal agency has funded more than 70 projects focused on invasive species.

Recipients include states, local governments, tribes, universities and nonprofit organizations.
