Ball State steps up reporting, education efforts to help prevent sexual violence on campus
3/29/2014MUNCIE, Ind. — Incoming freshmen at Ball State University will have to complete an online course examining the connection between alcohol use and sexual violence as the school works to comply with a new federal law.
The Star Press reports the Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act also requires schools to track domestic violence, dating violence and stalking incidents.
The law is part of a national push to protect students from sexual assault. Ball State’s latest Campus Security Report says eight forcible sex offenses were reported on campus and three in noncampus buildings in 2012.
The U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of Civil Rights says such incidents are widely under-reported. The office estimates nearly 20 percent of college women will be victims of attempted or actual sexual assault.
