ANN ARBOR, Mich. — President Barack Obama plans to visit the University of Michigan today to discuss his proposal to raise the federal minimum wage.

Obama has endorsed legislation that would gradually raise the national minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $10.10 by 2016. Senate Democrats are planning votes on a bill, but Republicans are working to block it.

The president implored Congress in his State of the Union address to “give America a raise.”

A coalition of Michigan civil rights, faith, labor and community groups has its own proposal.

Raise Michigan needs to gather 258,000 valid signatures by late May to put before the Legislature a measure that would gradually raise the state’s minimum wage from $7.40 to $10.10 an hour by 2017 and automatically increase it with inflation in future years.
