DETROIT — Detroit police have arrested a prisoner who escaped from custody while being treated for a gunshot wound at a local hospital.

Police said in a statement that 19-year-old Kenneth Hickman escaped Wednesday evening when the officer assigned to him left the room at Sinai Grace Hospital.

Police say the officer believed the Detroit man was cuffed to the bed. The officer called for help once he realized Hickman had escaped.

Officers said they apprehended Hickman today after he made contact with a relative who in turn contacted police. Police say they worked to “negotiate a peaceful surrender.”

Police say Hickman was arrested after he tried to rob a woman and man at gunpoint in her home May 9 and that Hickman was shot and wounded during the attempted robbery.
