INDIANAPOLIS — Authorities say one person is in custody after a 25-year-old Indiana man was fatally shot in a parking lot near the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Speedway Police Lt. Trent Theobald says the shooting happened early today in Coke Lot 1C. Officers and medics responded and pronounced 25-year-old Max Levine of Kokomo, Indiana, dead at the scene.

Police did not provide further information about the suspect or the shooting.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Brian Olehy says the incident during the Indianapolis 500 race weekend is unusual, but it isn’t the first one.

A fan was hospitalized in 2012 after he was shot in the chest after an apparent altercation across from the speedway.
