ADELANTO, Calif. — Authorities say a small private plane has crashed on a dry lake bed in the Mojave Desert, killing a veteran Los Angeles paramedic and critically injuring a boy with him.

The Los Angeles Fire Department says Brian Lee, a paramedic and helicopter pilot with more than 25 years’ experience, was off duty when the plane crashed earlier today at El Mirage Dry Lake in San Bernardino County. He was 47.

A 7- to 8-year-old boy in the plane is hospitalized in critical condition.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the single-engine Grumman AA-1A had taken off from and was planning to land on the lake bed.

Authorities tell KNBC-TV that it nosedived and flipped several times after crashing.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
