UM's ex-coach Carr to speak at Monroe fund-raiser
10/8/2008MONROE - Former University of Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr will speak at a dinner on Oct. 22 to raise funds for Monroe Public Schools programs.
Mr. Carr, who retired as Michigan's head coach at the close of the 2008 season having won 122 games, five Big Ten Championships, and the 1997 NCAA championship, will be the featured speaker at the schools' Education Foundation annual dinner. He was coach of the Wolverines for 13 years.
"I am sure that he will talk about his experience as coach," said Bobb Vergiels, district spokesman. "He will be available to answer questions from people who attend."
The event will be held at the La-Z-Boy Center at Monroe County Community College. A reception for the former coach is set for 5:30 p.m., followed by his talk at 6 p.m. Dinner will begin at 6:40 p.m.

The names of alumni for the first induction into the school hall of fame will also be announced at the dinner.
Money raised from the benefit will be used to pay for mini-grant programs administered by the Education Foundation of Monroe.
Teachers can apply for up to $500 in grants from the foundation to supplement or enhance learning for students and $1,000 is available in grants for building-wide projects or programs that benefit learning opportunities or community outreach projects.
