MONROE -- The deadline to submit applications for "second-generation scholarships" from the Monroe High School Alumni Association is Friday.

The $500 scholarships are offered to two students who have at least one parent who graduated from the high school.

Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 through the second trimester and have enrolled to attend a two-year or four-year college or trade school beginning this fall.

Also, they must write a 100 to 250-word personal essay summarizing their experiences and plans and provide two letters of recommendation from nonrelative adults, and one of those must be a teacher.
