COLUMBUS — Ohio State freshman safety and Central Catholic graduate Jayme Thompson underwent successful surgery today for what has been clarified as a severe high-ankle sprain, a school spokesman told The Blade.

Thompson had screws inserted in his left ankle to stabilize his lower-leg bones, which were loosened by damage to the connecting ligaments. He is expected to miss about three months, though his father, Deon Thompson, said today the return date could be sooner.

Thompson suffered the injury — first thought to be a fracture — during practice Wednesday.

An all-state member of the Fighting Irish’s state championship team last year, Thompson had impressed during the Buckeyes’ first four practices and appeared a strong candidate to contribute on special teams.
