End Zone: OSU Buckeyes

Use of a selection committee should only intensify BCS campaigning

  • If Ohio State is voted to the BCS national title game, Urban Meyer promises to make our streets safer, cut taxes, and use a fullback in goal-line packages.

Sorry, the month has blurred together, one election season giving way to another. OSU is officially in campaign mode, with receiver Evan Spencer's playful "wipe the field" bluster and Meyer's in-house challenge for the Buckeyes to keep winning with flair only the beginning.

I suspect yard signs, a Rotary club endorsement, and a stump speech are next. Recall Meyer lobbying against an OSU-Michigan rematch in the title game in 2006.

"If that does happen, all the presidents need to get together immediately and put together a playoff system," Meyer said then. "I mean, like now."

If this all sounds like a joke, that's because the BCS is one. While the four-team playoff will be an improvement next year, the use of a selection committee should only intensify campaigning. Even this season, OSU — rightly third behind Alabama and Florida State — is one of four power-conference unbeatens courting voters.

It will be a fascinating next month. The Meyer administration remarkably may need to begin 39-0 at OSU to get a shot at the national title, and if that's the case, don't expect Meyer to go down silently.
