University of Toledo improving lives and the community

As a public research university, the University of Toledo exists to provide access to a high-quality education, to advance knowledge through research and discovery, and to serve our community.

This is who we are. We are a large, diverse institution of higher education giving our neighbors and community members the opportunity to study a wide range of disciplines with talented and dedicated faculty.

The students who choose UT — nearly one-third of them first-generation college students — are determined to succeed. We challenge them in the classroom, support them on campus, and celebrate their achievements. UT is the top-ranked institution in the region for social mobility and second in Ohio. We rank among the highest compared to other Ohio public research universities for income mobility.

Leaders across every industry credit UT for putting them on a path to success. Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter and editor Michael D. Sallah, an alumnus of both UT and The Blade, will return to his alma mater in December as our Fall Commencement speaker.

Toledo Public Schools Superintendent Romules Durant is almost as passionate about his experiences as a Rocket as he is about our city’s school district. 

Bob Savage, co-founder of the Savage and Associates financial services firm, has shown his appreciation for his UT degree with generous support over the years to the UT College of Business and Innovation.

UT is solving global challenges. Researchers on our campus are leading the fight against human trafficking, protecting access to clean drinking water, and accelerating the search for better treatments for cancer and other illnesses. 

Experts grown in our community and recruited here from abroad thrive in an environment that provides ample opportunity for interdisciplinary collaboration.

And UT is proud to be named for this city, and we embrace our role as an anchor institution committed to moving this region forward. We are a major force contributing to northwest Ohio’s growth and development. 

The university’s impact to the region’s economy totals $3.3 billion, which includes student and employee spending over an academic year and its ripple effect, as well as the long-term value of the educated workforce of UT alumni and faculty living in the area.

The University of Toledo provides opportunity to develop future leaders, and we take that responsibility seriously. Jesup W. Scott believed Toledo was destined to become the “future great city of the world,” so he founded the then-Toledo University of Arts and Trades 145 years ago to help make that vision a reality. We honor his legacy with our mission to improve the human condition.
