Our Town Going Out

Fort Meigs, comedy, high school sports highlight weekend

Two hundred years ago Saturday, a fort was established on the Maumee River to bolster the American military's efforts in the Northwest Territory during the war against the British.

To commemorate the anniversary at Fort Meigs, War of 1812 re-enactors will drill maneuvers and wield weapons used during the period, as well as stage demonstrations on how the fort was built and how folks lived, ate, and worked at the time.

Visitors will be able to take tent tours and learn about carpentry, sewing, spinning, weaving, rope making, and other 1812-era activities and trades. Re-enactors will hew logs to show how they helped defend the fort from besieging forces in May and July of 1813.

The Founder's Day event will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the fort, 29100 West River Rd., Perrysburg. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, and $4 for students. Children age 5 and younger are admitted free. For more information visit fortmeigs.org.

For modern-day entertainment, the Funny Bone Comedy Club will present comedian Tony Roberts, who has been featured on HBO, BET, and Comedy Central television shows and in the Showtime comedy special Wired! Roberts also starred in a series of Burger King commercials and hosted VH1's Dance Slam Cam.

Performances are slated for 8 and 10:30 p.m. Friday, and 7 and 10 p.m. Saturday at Funny Bone, 6140 Levis Commons Blvd. Tickets are $20 for those 21 and older. Call 419-931-3474.
