Our Town Going Out

Downtown fun for season in Perrysburg starts Friday

First Friday fun in downtown Perrysburg will be back a month earlier this year, with its first event Friday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Clowns, live music, vendors, bouncy house, YMCA fun bus, face painting, fire trucks, and the children's train rides will take up Second Street and the sidewalks on Louisiana Avenue. The event is operated by Downtown Perrysburg Inc. It is free to families.

Newly appointed Downtown Perrysburg Inc. board President Sabrina Weaver moved to Perrysburg less than two years ago when she walked with her family downtown and surprisingly found First Friday going on.

"It is as American as apple pie," she said.

The band for Friday is Stir Crazy, which plays classic rock. The Dance Factory and Toledo Pride also will be performing.

Because the first Friday of July is the national holiday of July, 4 Downtown Perrysburg Inc. decided to move up the first, First Friday to May and skip having such an event in July. There will also be First Fridays on June 6, Aug. 1, and Sept. 5.

Vendors include Cedar Creek Church, Prevention Partners-PASA Teen Board, Ellie’s Essentials, Jacky’s Depot Gourmet Ice Pops and Ice Cream, Usborne Books, Welch Publishing Stride, Serenity Farm Equestrian Center, the Mother’s Center of Greater Toledo, Ever Dry Weatherproofing, ShutterLove Studio, and Thayer Toyota.

Several local youth drug-prevention organizations will have an Above the Influence program that will have a driving simulator and fatal vision goggles along with T-shirt sales and other activities.

Downtown Perrysburg Inc. funds the free children's events through a few fund-raisers such as a beer and wine tent at Winterfest and the Rock the Docks events. Sponsors also help the organization.

The Outdoor Movie Night is scheduled for July 13 to show Despicable Me 2. A Classic Car Show will be Aug. 2 and Indoor Movie Night Dec. 13, when Frozen will be shown. For adults there will be a Micro Brew Tasting June 20 and Rock the Docks the following day.

Mrs. Weaver has two boys ages 3 and 7 that are "ecstatic" for First Friday's to start again.

"From the bouncy house to the train ride and face painting, there is so much to do," she said. "But they are probably most looking forward to putting on a real fireman's hat and getting their turn to 'drive' the firetrucks.

"After a long, hard winter, this is just what the doctor ordered."
