Life didn't always go as expected for 100-year-old Ann Petrell, a resident of The Manor at Perrysburg nursing home.
A homemaker in Kenosha, Wis., where she raised son Jerry Petrell, of Whitehouse, she became a widow at age 47. She got a job at a paper binding company and worked her way to becoming a manager before retiring at age 65.
Her fortitude and stalwartness carried her during those times and through a century of life, which she lived independently until just a few years ago, said her daughter-in-law, Dorothy Petrell.
"She is a very strong woman who is always in control. She had to be," she said.
Ann Petrell moved from Wisconsin to Abundant Life assisted living in Perrysburg about a decade ago to be nearer to her son and his family, which includes grandson Mark and granddaughters Susan and Jill, as well as their children. She came to The Manor a few years ago after she began using a wheelchair.
The family all gathered around her Sunday at the nursing home to mark her 100th birthday, which is today.
"She seemed to know us all [then]," Dorothy Petrell said of her mother-in-law, who has been experiencing some dementia only within the past six months.
Ann Petrell knew it was a milestone birthday, too.
"It's been a goal of hers to turn 100. I don't know what her next goal will be," her daughter-in-law said with a laugh.
