A review of the city's zoning code could result in changes for permanent and temporary signs in Perrysburg.
Perrysburg's planning and zoning division and council committee are in the midst of reviewing the city's code for signs, including permanent signs such as on a business property and temporary signs that may be displayed on personal property.
The proposed revisions will go to the Municipal Planning Commission at its Nov. 29 meeting, back to committee, and then to city council for a public hearing likely in January, according to committee chairman Timothy McCarthy.
The review was prompted when some properties were annexed into the city, including the Ed Schmidt auto dealership on Dixie Highway, and to clear up some complications regarding superimposed requirements in a business corridor overlay, he said.
"Part of the purpose of revisiting the code is to reorganize it," Mr. McCarthy said.
Planning and zoning administrator Thomas King said the most dramatic change would be to freestanding signs in the downtown area, with a 6-foot maximum height and a 30-foot setback. The current setback is 10 feet, and Mr. King said about 80 percent of downtown businesses already meet these requirements.
"It's primarily driven by an aesthetic concern," Mr. McCarthy said of the sign code.
Other proposed changes include allowing an additional freestanding sign if frontage on property zoned C-3 or C-4 is greater than 500 feet, as well as increasing the height on singular signs for multiple business tenants. The zoning of C-3 is for community shopping areas and C-4 is for highway commercial areas.
The committee also is reviewing how long temporary signs may be displayed. They suggested signs may be posted up to 60 days before an event and must be removed within seven days after that event.
This would reduce the current regulation of 90 days prior and 14 days after an event.
