100 area families to get food, toys, gifts from Perrysburg Township Operation Breadbasket

Santa's elves have been extraordinarily busy in Perrysburg Township, filling three cavernous rooms in the township office building on Lime City Road with toys, clothing, and food for Operation Breadbasket.

"It's going to be a good Christmas for everybody," said Robert Warnimont, director of the township recreation department and co-coordinator of the annual charity drive.

One hundred area families will be getting a sack full of toys to give their children, as well as time to shop in the bay of the old firehouse where rows of tables are laden with more toys, household items, Christmas decorations, and stacks and stacks of clothes.

"They can take whatever they want over here," volunteer Carol Warnimont said.

She said students from Penta Career Center and associates from Kohl's had helped sort the store area, while volunteers from Perrysburg Christians United had made sure each family got five age-appropriate toys per child and divided the food.

"It's pretty impressive," Mr. Warnimont said of the amount of items that had been donated and purchased with cash raised by Penta's car show and other contributions.

Families will receive three big boxes of nonperishable food like canned vegetables and fruit, cereal, soup, and noodles, as well as fresh milk, butter, cheese, baloney, peanut butter, jelly, and eggs.

Each family will get a ham for their holiday feast, and bigger families will get a turkey too, Mr. Warnimont said.

"Some of these families have seven kids," he said.

Recipients applied through the Salvation Army. Requirements were not income-based but based on the variety of hard times families can face, Mr. Warnimont said.

"You'd be surprised that mom and dad can be working and they still be really, really hurting," he said.

Families also get to pick out winter coats and will receive a gift card to purchase other items to make their season bright.

Distribution will take place from 9 a.m. to noon today at the township offices at 26609 Lime City Rd., Perrysburg Township.
