Perrysburg Councilman Mackin announces run for municipal judge

Tom Mackin

Tom Mackin is throwing his hat in the ring with candidates C. Drew Griffith, Molly Mack, and Aram Ohanian to be the next Perrysburg Municipal Court judge.

Mr. Mackin, a 1990 graduate from the University of Toledo College of Law, has been a member of Perrysburg City Council since 1998 and is an attorney in his own private practice.

Mr. Griffith, Ms. Mack, and Mr. Ohanian are on the Republican ballot for the May 7 primary. Winner of the primary contest will advance to the Nov. 5 general election when voters will elect a new judge to replace Judge S. Dwight Osterud.

Mr. Mackin, a Democrat, said he will run as a non-partisan candidate. His name  will be on the general election ballot Nov. 5.

“A judge must be non-partisan. That is why I am not participating in a primary this spring,” Mr. Mackin said. “The court has always been non-partisan. Keeping it that way is important because it affirms everyone will be given a fair and impartial hearing.”

Judge Osterud is retiring after 23 years. The term for the new judge begins Jan. 1, 2014.

Mr. Mackin is a member of the Perrysburg Rotary Club and Blessed John XXIII Catholic Parish.

“I spoke with other attorneys, police, and prosecutors who appear before the court. I was not surprised the overwhelming consensus was the court was administered in an open and fair manner," he said. "If elected, I’d administer the court in a similar manner, being open and accessible to those that come before it.”

Ms. Mack, of Perrysburg Township, is chief of the civil division at Wood County prosecutor's office. She is married to Perrysburg Township Trustee Bob Mack.

Mr. Griffith, of Perrysburg, is an attorney at a private practice and magistrate in Northwood Mayor's Court.

Mr. Ohanian, of Perrysburg, has been working at the Wood County prosecutor's office as an assistant prosecutor since 2003.

The court has jurisdiction over misdemeanor criminal and traffic cases and small claims issues in Perrysburg, Northwood, Rossford, Walbridge, Millbury, and Perrysburg, Lake, and Troy townships.
