Perrysburg Township fire captain Rodriguez promoted to deputy chief

Perrysburg Township fire department Captain James Rodriguez was promoted to deputy chief today by the Perrysburg Township trustees.

Deputy Chief Rodriguez has been working full time for the township fire department since 1997. He started as a volunteer for the department. He will be paid $33.65 a hour, with the opportunity for overtime hours if approved by the fire chief. The promotion will be effective April 1.

"He is a hard worker that has been in the department for a long time," Fire Chief Tom Brice said. "He has good leadership and is an excellent worker."

For the past two years the deputy chief position has been open. Chief Brice was receiving an extra stipend to do the extra workload. But he is happy to have someone fill that role.

"Now maybe I will get to see my family again," he joked.

Trustee Robert Mack said it was a position they wanted to fill earlier, but it was put off with several retirees the township administration has had.

The Perrysburg Township board of trustees will be introducing the new deputy chief to the public at their April 13 meeting.

"We had two great candidates and it was not an easy decision for the trustees," Mr. Mack said. "Jim [Rodriguez] has had more time here and seniority that really helped him."
