Most artists don't want their worked to be touched or felt, but admired by the eyes in the audience.

When Toledo artist Dani Herrera set up her exhibit in the Perrysburg Municipal Building, Mayor Nelson Evans walked by, looking at it. She insisted to him to touch it. He originally said no, but then did.

"I encourage people to touch it. I want them to feel what is made out of," Mrs. Herrera said.

Her pieces aren't painted or drawn. She puts together random scraps from things she finds. She will use buttons, zippers, dryer lint, newspaper, recycled materials, and other scrap fabrics.

From Monday to Aug. 15, she will have an exhibit up at the Perrysburg Municipal Building with many pop icon images and figurative works.

"Her self-taught art training has given her freedom to be fearless, and innovative forging is a unique genre in the arts," said Robin Ballmer of Main Art-ery.

Mrs. Herrera started into making art five or six years ago, she said. But it was three years ago when it became a full-time job. That includes 10 to 16 hour days.

"I get OCD [obsessive-compulsive disorder] real bad," she said. "When I get something in my mind I will start early in the morning and I can't finish until it is done. I will work late, to around 11 p.m."

Since her debut exhibit in 2011, she's had gallery showings in New York and Chicago, and she has won awards. One of her pieces is of the United States flag, titled USA. Itis composed of text from the book The Big Secret mixed each scrap of paper, cloth, and assorted embellishments, all meticulously pasted together with a hot glue gun.
