Perrysburg High School student Jocelyn Carns will hang up her soccer cleats for a weekend, hide her bruises, and put on high heels on Nov. 8 at the Miss Teen Ohio USA competition in Portsmouth, Ohio.

The defender for the Greater Toledo Fubol Club's team Impact is used to competing on the soccer field, but is nervous for her first pageant.

"My mom got an email [that I made it] and texted me in class and I was like 'oh my God,'" she said. "I've watched Miss USA. That is a lot to prepare for."

On Nov. 8 and 9, more than 100 girls ages 14 to 19 from throughout Ohio will compete for one to be named Miss Ohio Teen USA. The winner will be in a national competition next summer for Miss Teen USA.

The young Carns, 15, had to submit a photo and an autobiography for the competition.

For the Ohio contest, she will have rehearsals for the show, interview with judges, then have three segments in the show. Those segments are wearing an evening gown, a swimsuit, and then have to answer a question live.

"It is very nerve-wracking, I've not walked in heels in my life," Jocelyn said. "I don't model."

She has been considering modeling lately to help pay for college. She wants to play soccer in college and study culinary arts.

"She's a sporty girl," her mother Julie Carns said. "The photo shoot was new. Pageant reps have really been helpful. It is really exciting and overwhelming. We've shopped for gowns. They are expensive, you have no idea."

The Perrysburg student and her mother are excited about the opportunity to obtain a scholarship if she finishes in the top 15 in Ohio.

Area sponsors have helped the young Carns with outfits and funding to be in the competition. Fellow Perrysburg High School student Niara Williams couldn't participate after being selected because she wasn't able to get enough sponsors. She said she will compete in Miss Tennessee Teen USA next year in college.

Outside of wearing heels, Jocelyn and her mother are both concerned with the swimsuit part of the show.

"I don't like that part," Mrs. Carns said. "But she is very fit and works hard at it. I don't think it is meant in a wrong way, more to show fitness."

The young Carns said she likely will find the event a bit odd because she's not used to going on stage with all of the eyes on her.
