Money raised in Perrysburg Schools for books for parents of newborns

Students in Perrysburg Schools’ 4th and 5th grade EXCELS classes recently completed a service learning project called Read to Me: Conveying the Importance of Literacy Through Service Learning.

The project was to show students and new parents the importance of reading to the success of young children in school. The school district thanks the Perrysburg Schools Foundation for providing a mini-grant to help with this project.

The students raised money to purchase picture books for new mothers. The books were donated to the Toledo Hospital where they will be given to new mothers as they leave the hospital with their new babies.

Along with the books, students wrote personal narratives about reading with their parents when they were very young children. They were to be delivered to Toledo Hospital’s maternity ward.

Students were creative in raising money. Many chose the working path and completed odd jobs around the house such as cleaning, laundry and raking leaves. A couple of students even mucked out horse stalls to earn their money. Others pursued the entrepreneurial route. They set up hot chocolate stands, created Christmas ornaments to sell and sold items to Once Upon a Child. A few students even went to work at area offices.

Altogether the students raised over $1,000, which allowed them to donate over 150 books.
