David Harms, of Walbridge, a social studies teacher at Penta Career Center in Perrysburg Township, has been named the 2013 Outstanding Technology-Using Teacher of the Year for Ohio.

The honor came from the Instructional Technology Partnership of Ohio and the International Society for Technology in Education. Harms received the award Feb. 11 during the eTech State Techology Conference at the Columbus Convention Center.

He was nominated by Penta staff members Ryan Lee, academic supervisor, and Mark Smith, instructor of social studies, for his tremendous efforts to embed technology into the daily lives of his students. Harms uses technology tools like Edmodo, Zondle and Educreations to help students view assignments, post homework, watch video lectures, and build their vocabulary by using games.

“I feel it’s important to train students on technology they are going to be expected to know in college and the workplace,” says Harms. “The students are positive about these technology-based lessons because they can access assignments before and after class.”

Harms has been teaching social studies at Penta since 2002. He has a master’s degree in Educational Technology from Lourdes University, and is completing his PhD in Educational Technology from Walden University.
