Penta Career Center Superintendent Ron Matter is beginning to feel the impact of the teachers retirement benefit changes.
There are 11 teachers, two administrators, one information technology and one operations employee retiring at Penta this year before July 1 to cash in on state retirement benefits before they change.
If those employees retire before summer, they will get a 2 percent increase in benefits a year after retiring. If they retire after July 1, they have to wait five years to get the same increase.
Also after that date, teachers will have to contribute 11 percent of their paycheck into the retirement fund, up from 10 percent now. Each year until 2016, that percentage rises, reaching 14 percent in 2016.
"It is a big challenge for us," Mr. Matter said. "We are having 342 years of experience walk out the door. That is a lot of people in our institution that are knowledgeable and get what we do."
He said it is extremely difficult to fill some of the more specialized teaching positions for the Perrysburg Township vocational school.
Mr. Matter said a district like Perrysburg could seek a math or English teacher and receive 300 to 400 applications.
"We have a construction-electrician teacher to replace and I posted the opening three weeks ago and no one has put in an application yet," Mr. Matter said. "It is a real challenge to hire someone in the career-tech side."
No rehiring of the soon-to-retire teacher is expected, he said.
