Perrysburg school board member Barry Van Hoozen resigns his office Dec. 24 to become a Perrysburg City Council member, and the Board of Education is seeking a replacement.
Applicants need to submit a letter of interest to Superintendent Tom Hosler by 4 p.m. Jan. 3. Interviews will take place Jan. 9, beginning at 5:30 p.m., and the school board is expected to appoint a replacement at its 5:30 p.m. meeting on Jan. 13. A majority vote is needed.
If the board fails to appoint a new member before Feb. 3, the Wood County probate court will make the selection.
Applicants should email an application letter to email@example.com or by mail to Thomas Hosler, Perrysburg Schools, 140 E. Indiana Ave., Perrysburg, Ohio, 43551. Applicants are encouraged to attach qualifications, including their resume, community involvement in support of the schools, and examples of collaboration.
The school board will have changes beginning Jan. 1. Sue Larimer and Cal Smith were elected in November to the board, as Valerie Hovland's lost her re-election bid. Jason Decker, Lara Martin Lengel, and Mark Schoenlein also vied for one of the seats.
Mr. Schoenlein said at the November school board meeting that he would not apply for the opening. He believes Ms. Hovland should to appointed, as she had the next highest number of votes in November.
Mr. Hosler and the district acknowledged Ms. Hovland, Mr. Schoenlein, and Mr. Van Hoozen for their service to the board at Monday's meeting. Ms. Hovland has been a board member from 2006 to 2013, and Mr. Schoenlein and Mr. Van Hoozen were both from 2002 to 2013.
“We stand in debt to these three leaders for giving so generously of their time and expertise for the students in our community,” Mr. Hosler said. “They made an extraordinary commitment with their service on the board - often a difficult and thankless job.”
