Perrysburg school board to discuss new school, firing an employee

Talk about a proposed new fifth and sixth grade building for the Perrysburg Schools will continue Monday with a special 7 a.m. board of Education meeting at the Commodore Building.

Also at the meeting, the board is expected to vote to terminate Eric Whitson. He is currently on administration leave with pay after he was charged criminally with stealing $80,000 from the school district. The Bowling Green resident worked in the treasurer’‍s office and the case is pending.

The morning board meeting is on the second-floor board conference room.

The new school, plus money to cover some other district improvements, will cost about $40 million. The new school has been proposed to be 142,000 square feet on a site not yet determined.

The new school, which is planned to house up to 900 students, is to alleviate overcrowding in the elementary schools and use of portable classrooms. In addition to the new building, the district wants to install air conditioning at the junior high school and an auxiliary gym at the high school.

The amount of the levy depends on the total cost of improvements. Taxpayers are expected to be asked for approval a millage at the November general election.

At Monday‘s meeting will be an executive session to discuss the sale or purchase of land, possibly land for the new building.
