Perrysburg Twp. DVD distributor being closed

Stoppage of operations to idle 54 workers at park

A Perrysburg Township-based operation of a California distributor of DVDs, video games, and other home entertainment products will permanently close this fall because its parent firm has been sold to a competitor.

Video Products Distributors, Inc. which is also known as VPD and occupies two buildings in the Ampoint Industrial Park, at 668 1st St. and at 400 F St., said it will cease operations between Sept. 29 and Oct. 12, idling 54 workers, following a sale of the company to rival Ingram Entertainment Inc., of LaVergne, Tenn.

The company filed a closure notice Tuesday with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services as part of the federal Worker Adjustment Retraining and Notification Act.

On July 2 the Sacramento Bee reported that VPD Inc., which is based in Folsom, Calif., was bought by Ingram Entertainment as part of ongoing video industry restructuring. VPD employed about 160 workers at facilities in Folsom and Perrysburg Township, and at a small facility in Texas.

Ingram said after the acquisition that it anticipated closing some VPD operations as part of its consolidation of the California company.

VPD had been struggling as more consumers have turned to products like Netflix and other video-on-demand services. Blockbuster Video, which went bankrupt in November, had been VPD’s biggest customer.
