Dogs, owners to take stroll at Mutt Strut

Fund-raiser in Perrysburg to feature contests, food, vendors

Calling dogs of all ages, colors, and sizes — and their humans.

The Wood County Humane Society is holding its annual Mutt Strut fund-raiser Saturday at the W.W. Knight Nature Preserve, 9530 White Rd., in Perrysburg from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Walk-in registration is available for $15, but those who turn in at least that much in pledges get their registration fee waived. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. Walkers are encouraged to collect donations to sponsor themselves and their pet from family, friends, neighbors, employers, co-workers, and businesses. There is no per-mile donation; it is up to those donating to decide.

Walkers can walk as far or as a little as they want, said Jacqui Nathan, a volunteer who heads the humane society’s fund-raising committee. "Whatever you want to do, we don’t require any physical exertion," she said. "You can walk 10 feet or two miles, it’s up to you."

Last year’s event raised a little more than $5,000, and the group is hoping to top that this year, Ms. Nathan said.

Individual walkers can receive prizes depending on the amount of donations turned in, like Mutt Strut T-shirts, premium dog treats, foldable pet travel bowls and flashlight/poo bag dispenser combos donated by the Petco Foundation, Kongs and plush dog toys donated by Pet Supplies Plus, a free Dip Sampler at Don Pablo’s, or a year’s subscription to the Bark magazine.

The Top Dog (over 14 years old) also will get two tickets to the Eric Church concert at Joe Louis Arena on Oct. 4, a two-night stay at the Sheraton Sand Key Resort on the Gulf of Mexico in Clearwater Beach, Fla., a one-hour pet photo shoot, and $50 worth of printed photos compliments of Stone Fruit Studios, and a Jumbo Pet Flow pet dish donated by the Petco Foundation.

The Top Pup (14 years and under) also will get a Toledo Zoo family membership, four tickets to Imagination Station, a $20 gift card to Al-Mar Lanes, two children’s books written and signed by Toledo Area Humane Society Cruelty Officer Nancy Schilb, and a “I Heart Shakey” package, which includes a movie poster signed by star Rylie Behr and Shakey, stickers, and a bracelet.

Other activities will include a Wood County Humane Society doggie alumni parade at 10 a.m. and a Beauty PAWgent at 11:30 a.m. where a king and queen of the Mutt Strut will be crowned. There will also be contests for pets. Ms. Schilb will sign copies of her children’s books.

Attendees can meet Ruby the Red Eyed Tree Frog from WBGU-TV and other animal mascots, do a paw painting on a keepsake plate from In 2 Art Studio, enjoy the Blue Booth photo booth, get free training advice from K-9 Solutions, and have a pet sketch done by Marsha B.

The Wood County Humane Society is a nonprofit organization funded with private donations from individuals and businesses, Community Shares of Northwest Ohio (a workplace giving campaign), and fund-raisers like the Mutt Strut. WCHS does not receive any funding from national humane organizations or the United Way.

Proceeds from this event will help care for homeless and abused animals, and will help fund programs like the cruelty investigation division, the education program, spay/neuter initiative projects, and Safe Pets, which allows people escaping domestic violence situations to place their pet(s) in the temporary care of WCHS.
