Runners make their way through Wildwood Metropark's trails.
About 600 racers lined up on the Wildwood Metropark Manor House lawn today to have fun and raise money in the annual Happy Trails 5K.
The race, which has been taking place for more than five years, takes runners along the scenic highlights of the preserve located in Sylvania Township.
“It’s a scenic course that routes through woods and takes runners around the boardwalk right along the Ottawa River,” Scott Carpenter, director of public relations for Metroparks of the Toledo Area, said. “Runners go through a variety of terrain from sandy trails to the boardwalk.”
The race, that started at 8 a.m. Saturday and took seasoned runners about 15 to 20 minutes to complete, also included a slower-paced walk, the BCSN Fit One Mile Walk, led by the Toledo Mud Hens’ mascots Muddy and Muddonna.
Proceeds raised from the event benefit the Metro Park system in Lucas County, by supporting maintenance and new trail development projects for the park’s 100 miles of trail.
