Sisters of St. Francis of Sylvania rang chapel bells 27 times for the victims, read their names, held a moment of silence, and prayed for those killed. At the same time, local clergy persons led a prayer outside each school in the Oregon school district.
Both services started at 9:30 a.m., about the time last Friday that Adam Lanza entered Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. Lanza killed 20 young students and six school staff members. He had killed his mother earlier that morning; Lanza killed himself after the massacre.
