Annexation hearing set for Arbor Way residents in Sylvania Township

Lucas County Commissioners will review on Tuesday  a request by Sylvania Township residents on Arbor Way  for annexation into the City of Sylvania.

A hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.in One Government Center in downtown Toledo  where the commissioners may decide on the annexation petition submitted by 21 homeowners to have 6.3 acres of property on Arbor Way between Whiteford Road and Silvertown Drive join the city.

The annexation request was initiated because the homeowners wanted to switch to a sewer system instead of a septic tank system. Bill Dryer, a Sylvania resident who owns rental property on the street, said the septic tank replacements and maintenance  have been a financial burden to the homeowners.

John Jennewine, chairman of the township's board of trustees, said the township does not plan to protest the annexation, however the trustees and their legal counsel will be present to ensure the residents have of all the facts regarding taxes, cost of services, and the type of services the township provides.

Because Sylvania Township does not provide sewer services, township residents can have sewer lines installed by either Lucas County or the City of Sylvania. The Arbor Way properties are within the City of Sylvania’s sewer district. However, as city residents the water and sewer rates could be lower.

City Law Director James Moan, who filed the petition for annexation on behalf of the residents on Feb. 28, said  the city is uncertain how the commissioners will rule on the petition. He said they could decide to approve it or request further information before ruling.
