Bridge repairs are the reason the Lucas County Engineer's Office will shut down Sylvania Avenue between Corey/Whiteford and Holland-Sylvania roads for 14 days starting Monday, but that's not the only work that will get done, a department official said.

Besides rehabilitating and resurfacing the deck of the bridge over the Ottawa River, crews will replace drainage structures along the closed stretch of Sylvania Avenue, repair curbs, and grind off and replace the pavement in Sylvania Township, said Josh Hazard, a construction supervisor with the engineer's office.

Contractor Gerken Paving expects to repave at least to an intermediate course by the time Sylvania reopens June 17, Mr. Hazard said, but the company's goal is to pave the new surface course by then, too. If not, any paving after the street reopens will be done at night, he said.

The Napoleon-based company is to be paid $650,757.30 for its work.

A separate, state project will involve Sylvania at Corey and Whiteford roads later this construction season. The Ohio Department of Transportation plans to add turn lanes on Corey and Whiteford at Sylvania, along with widening the Corey exit from eastbound I-475, to ease congestion in the area.

Bids for that contract are scheduled for opening Thursday, with work likely to start in early July, said Theresa Pollick, an ODOT spokesman in Bowling Green.

The county also plans to widen Sylvania between Lancelot Road and U.S. 23 this summer.
