4 file to run for Sylvania Township, 6 to run for school board

Four people put their hat in the ring for the two vacant seats on Sylvania Township’s Board of Trustees and six candidates are vying for a spot on the Sylvania Board of Education.

The candidates will be on the Nov. 5 ballot.

Township Trustees Kevin Haddad and John Jennewine will compete for their seats on the three-member board against Penny Levine,John Crandall, and Donald Miller.

Ms. Levine ran in the November. 2011 election but lost to Neal Mahoney won. Mr. Crandall is a Sylvania school board member. Those two and Mr. Haddad are certified to be the on the November ballot. Mr. Miller and Mr. Jennewine are awaiting certification by the Lucas County Board of Elections.

The deadline to file to be on the ballot was Wednesday. The township spots are four-year terms and $20,568 a year.

On the Sylvania school board, spots held by Mr. Crandall, David Spiess, and Julie Hoffman are up for election. Running are Mr. Spiess, Ms. Hoffman, Mark Clark, Carol McElfresh, Kevin Eff, and Stephen Rothschild. The only certified candidate is Mr. Rothschild.

 

Terms on the five-member board are four years. Each member is paid $125 per meeting up to 20 meetings per year, or $2,500 per year maximum.

Also on the November ballot for Sylvania City Council -- but the filing deadline for candidates was last month -- are incumbents Mary Westphal, Katherine Cappellini, and Mike Brown, each running unopposed, as is Mayor Craig Stough. The terms of office are four years. The mayor is paid $29,988 annually, president of city council is $11,617, and council members are paid, $10,417. There are seven members on council.
