Another cellular phone carrier will rent space at a Sylvania water tower, bringing in money to the city water fund to be used for maintenance expenses.

The lease agreement is with Cingular Wireless to put up an antenna and equipment at the base of the 500,000-gallon water tower at Burnham Park. City Council approved the agreement this month.

The wireless company will pay an upfront fee of $75,000 plus rental fees starting at $3,431 a month or $41,172 a year for 25 years. The rent will increase by 3 percent a year for the first 20 years and 5 percent annually after that.

City Services Director Kevin Aller said the city has contracts with two other cell phone carriers at the same water tower. Such contracts with carriers are usually done with five-year renewals, where each party may ask to renegotiate, which rarely happens, he said.

Also renting space at the Burnham tower are Sprint and T-Mobile, which negotiated contracts in 2001 and 2012, respectively. Both agreements are for 20 years. Last year, the city collected about $77,000 from the two companies.

Both companies paid a one-time maintenance charge, totaling nearly $70,000.

Those proceeds will be used to repaint the tank or repair corrosion damage, Mr. Aller said.

The tank gets a fresh coat of paint every five years. Its next touch-up is scheduled for 2016 and has an estimated cost of $120,000.
