Sylvania Township Police Chief Robert Boehme is spearheading a drive to provide each township household with a go-to guide on how to deal with various emergencies.

Chief Boehme, a resident of Springfield Township, was impressed when he received a Emergency Procedure Guide that detailed the necessary steps to take when dealing with natural disasters and other sudden events.

“A couple of weeks after I received mine, I began to research how to put one together for the residents of Sylvania Township,” he said.

Chief Boehme is working with Impact America, an international firm located in Maumee, to tailor the information for the residents and businesses in Sylvania Township. The company specializes in crisis management and emergency response services.

The flip-top guide will be designed as a quick reference item that can be easily accessed in a situation when a person has limited time to react. It will provide residents with instructions on what to do in natural disasters or severe weather. It will also provide advice on how to deal with other dangers, such as “stranger danger” for children, family violence, and assaults.

Chief Boehme also is partnering with Sylvania Township Fire Chief Jeff Kowalski for a section on fires, chemical emergencies, and other basic medical instructions. The guide will give tips on dealing with emergency situations before the fire department arrives on the scene, Chief Kowalski said.

The 11,000 households in the township will each receive one, as will businesses in the township. The project is expected to cost $28,000 and be finished by fall. Impact America is seeking area sponsors whose name or logo can be placed on certain pages, including the front cover. Chief Boehme said the goal is to have 75 percent of the cost covered by sponsors. The rest will be divided by the police and fire departments.
