A couple of Sylvania Township firefighters will be able to stretch their legs and work in a more efficient space as they finally moved on Sunday into the newly constructed Fire Station No. 1.

The firefighters from the station had spent months in close quarters at a home on Brint Road that was converted into a temporary station.

The moving truck picked up fire equipment, beds, and other furniture and moved it on Sunday to the new station. Crews of Fire Station No. 1 were living in the home owned by Lourdes University, starting in April, while the new station was being constructed at 6633 Monroe St.

The new building, which replaced an old station at the site, is now fully operational. The station has has 8,895 square feet and three bays to house a transport unit, fire engine, and truck. The sleeping quarters, which can accommodate 10, are on the second floor. Initially, five firemen will be stationed there, Fire Chief Jeff Kowalski said.

The Sylvania Township Fire Department, which serves Sylvania Township and the City of Sylvania, received the occupancy permit for the new station on Nov. 1.

An open house for all city and township residents to view the new fire house is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 17.

The cost to build and equip the new building is just below $2.3 million, although some some expenses are still being tallied.
