This year, Sylvania residents can attend a citizens academy hosted by either the Sylvania Township or Sylvania city police departments.
Bob Roe, city patrolman, is in charge of the academy this year. The city program has been in place since 2001. He expects about 15 graduates for this year’s class.
The city’s free Citizens Police Academy begins April 17. The eight-week course is open to city residents and employees of city businesses. The academy is held Wednesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for eight weeks at the Sylvania Police Department, 6635 Maplewood Ave.
Participants will have an opportunity to peek into the life of law enforcement.
“They will go over crimes scenes and see what officers look for from our point of view,” Mr. Roe said. “They will also get to role play a police officer, performing traffic stops.”
One of the highlights of both citizen academies is the day spent sharpening shooting skills at the shooting range in Sylvania Township.
The township will host its academy beginning April 8. The six-week course will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays at the department's office at 4420 King Rd. It is open to city and township residents and those who work in the area. Officer Jeff Matuszewski said there is a waiting list for this year’s session.
Those who complete either course could be candidates for the Citizens Patrol Group. Volunteers help patrol streets, help with car lockouts, and direct traffic flow in case of an accident.
