Sylvania police clarify rape case at Flower Hospital

Alleged victim was hospital patient, not worker

Sylvania police on Thursday provided new details and corrected information about an alleged rape of a patient that took place in a bathroom at ProMedica Flower Hospital last week.

Police said a 21-year-old female patient reported she was pulled by the arm by a male patient into a bathroom. There, the woman was reportedly asked to “pull down her pants.” When the woman refused, the man allegedly forced her to engage in sexual activity.

Police said the woman, a Toledo resident, was at first told to go into the bathroom with the man and then forced to enter the room.

The incident occurred at the hospital at 10:15 a.m. April 1, and was reported to a hospital employee at 11:07 p.m. April 2, said William Rhodus, Sylvania police chief.

Police were then notified immediately by a security guard. The report initially incorrectly identified the victim as an employee at the hospital's Subway located in the cafeteria.

A weapon was not used, the chief said. He said it was a one-time occurrence.

A ProMedica spokesman said both patients were released April 4. Chief Rhodus said they initially were on the same floor. After the hospital was alerted to the reported incident, the two were separated.

According to a ProMedica statement, upon learning of the allegation, hospital staff immediately took appropriate action with the alleged victim and reported the incident to police.

Police gathered an evidence kit as well as assorted clothing from the scene, the report states.

No arrests have been made and police were investigating.
