MIAMI – Sean Howe of Sylvania, who is from the Toledo School for the Arts, is a National YoungArts Foundation finalist in dance.

Chosen from 10,000 applications from students in nine disciplines in the visual, literary and performing arts, he is one of 152 who will participate in National YoungArts Week of events in Miami from Jan. 6 to 12.

Internationally renowned artists will provide classes to the finalists. Included in the artists are Adrian Grenier (1994 alumnus in Theater), Marisa Tomei, Bobby McFerrin, Andrew Rannells (1997 alumnus in Theater), and Bill T. Jones (YoungArts artistic advisor).

Students will have performances each evening -- readings, exhibitions, and screenings that are free and open to the public. YoungArts Week performances will be livestreamed on youngarts.org.

The week will conclude with a gala on Jan. 12.

Finalists were chosen through a blind adjudication process from a pool of applicants representing all 50 states and the District of Columbia, as well as all U.S. territories.

Monetary awards range from $1,000 to $10,000.

Up to 60 of the finalist will be nominated by YoungArts to become a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts, 20 of whom will be selected for the honor by the White House appointed Commission on Presidential Scholars. U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts are awarded the opportunity to perform at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and exhibit at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.

YoungArts is the only organization in the nation to recognize students in nine discipline categories of cinematic arts, dance, jazz, music, photography, theater, visual arts, voice, and writing. Next year, architecture and design will be added. The National YoungArts Foundation (formerly known as the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts) was established in 1981.
