One of the four Whiteford Elementary Destination Imagination teams has taken on the 2013 challenge titled ‘Wind Visible Challenge.”
The team, “Ninja’s in Training,” will meet at 4 p.m. Saturday with Dennis Slotnick, science teacher at Clay High School, to learn about the wind turbine and the data they have collected in the past year. This turbine has produced 95 percent of the power the school needs.
This will provide the students with a basis to begin their team project for the DI regional competition on March 9 at Pike-Delta-York High School in Delta, Ohio. The state competition will be held in Mount Vernon, Ohio on April 20.
The team of fifth grade students is made up of Devin Maynard, Gwendolyn Pyle, Grace Fisher, Carson Webster, Andrew Bowers, Emily Thielen, Noah Heilman, and team captain Stacy Maynard and assistant captain Heather Pyle.
This year’s educational program involves open-ended challenges in the following areas: In the Zone (technical), Wind Visible (scientific), In Disguise (fine arts), Change in Realitee (improvisational), Twist-O-Rama (structural), Real to Reel (service learning), and Roy G Biv (early learning)
Last year, all four of the Whiteford Destination Imagination teams won first place finishes at regionals. Two teams placed at state championships and headed to the international competition last spring
