Sylvania Schools proposes makeup days for lost snow, ice days

Sylvania Schools Superintendent Brad Rieger proposes extending extending several school days and adding days at the end of the scheduled school year to make up lost snow days.

He will ask parents at a meeting at noon today what they think of the plan. The meeting is the school district's offices at 4747 Holland-Sylvania Rd.

The district has 13 missed days for high school and junior high students and 14 days for elementary pupils this winter because of snow, ice, or bitter cold.

The state has excused nine calamity days this year, so the other lost days will have to be made up, four for the upper classmen and five for elementary school students.

Mr. Rieger's plan for which he is seeking feedback from parents is to extend the school year by one day for upperclassmen and junior high students and by two days for elementary schools. The school year is scheduled to end June. 4.

To make up the other days, he proposed to extend 11 school days in April by one hour for the equivalent of two additional instructional days and to have three scheduled late-start days to instead be full days to collectively make up one instructional day.
