Racing for Recovery event set for Oct. 20

Racing for Recovery will hold its 12th annual 5K/10K Run/Walk event on Sunday, Oct. 20, on the campus of Lourdes University, 6832 Convent Blvd.

The event is in memory of Eric J. Floyd, Brent Vanderpol, and Todd Sporleder who died because of substance abuse issues.

Runners, walkers, and sideline supporters can advance registration and event information at www.RacingforRecovery.org and www.Facebook.com/RacingforRecovery.

The days events will begin at 7 a.m. with check-in and registration. Then, the children's fun run is at 8:30 a.m. (free for children 9 and under). The 5K/10K Run/Walk begins at 9 a.m., followed by an awards ceremony at 10:30 a.m..

Music and food will be on hand, and dressing in a Halloween costume is encouraged.

Racing for Recovery offers a holistic model for treating addiction. The organization is aimed at uniting addicts, family and friends, and members of the community. Family members are encouraged to share how addiction has impacted them.

Racing for Recovery offers professional counseling and intervention services.

Todd Crandell, founder and president of Racing for Recovery and an accomplished triathlete, had a 13-year struggle with substance abuse. He quit using drugs and alcohol on April 15, 1993 and has been sober ever since. He is now a licensed professional counselor and licensed chemical dependency counselor, devoted father of four and a vocal community awareness advocate.
