U.S. Senate remembers
key Battle of Lake Erie

The U.S. Senate unanimously approved a resolution marking the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie, a key point in the War of 1812.

The resolution, offered by Ohio Sens. Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman and Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey, was approved Monday. The Sept. 10, 1813, battle took place in the waters near Put-in-Bay and was a major American victory under Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry.

“The patriots who fought the British off of Put-in-Bay helped ensure that the freedom we won in the Revolutionary War would not be lost, and that our fledgling nation remained independent. I am very pleased to see the U.S. Senate vote unanimously to recognize their heroism,” Mr. Portman said in a written statement.

Numerous bicentennial events are planned this summer to commemorate the historic event, including a Labor Day re-enactment of the battle.
