Perrysburg Township Maintenance Supervisor Kraig Gottfried retired Wednesday, but the board of trustees promptly hired him for a new position.

Mr. Gottfried, 49, who has been working for the township since 1989, is currently making about $70,000 a year. He will be hired back as a entry-level maintenance worker salary of about $55,000. He will be starting with two weeks vacation, and will not get overtime. He is retiring April 30 and being hired back May 1.

"No one told me not to retire, I had to get my benefits I have today before they go away," he said. "Everyone from the (Ohio Public Employees Retirement Systems) told me I had to."

In 2006, Mr. Gottfried was appointed to maintenance supervisor after Gary Britten resigned from the position because Mr. Britten was elected as a township trustee.

"He's very valuable and has a lot of knowledge," Mr. Britten said. "He has always been a go-getter. He is a good leader and is well respected."

The township is looking at losing another long-term employee in Police Officer Guy Pinson. Police Chief Mark Hetrick read Officer Pinson's retirement letter, which said he was proud to serve Perrysburg Township for the last 24 years.

Officer Pinson is the senior officer in the department.
