News of Art: Health science students, staff, faculty to show work

The ninth annual artist showcase on the Health Science Campus of the University of Toledo, the former Medical College of Ohio, continues through March 17 on the fourth floor of Mulford Library. It includes 86 pieces by 29 students, staff, and faculty affiliated with the health sciences. The exhibit can be seen during library hours: 7:30 a.m. to midnight Monday to Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m. to midnight Sunday. People who want to volunteer at events organized by the Arts Commission, such as Sound Trek, The Mix, Hot Glass, Art Walk, and Gallery Loop, must attend an orientation. Coming up is one such session, 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 19 at the commission's office, 1838 Parkwood Ave. at Monroe Street across from the Toledo Museum of Art. Calls for artists:

● Launch Pad Cooperative, an artist-run gallery, invites filmmakers, bloggers, and writers to enter two contests it's offering. Its Featured Films series will showcase all genres in shorts and/​or experimental videos, and feature-length films. The winners will have their films screened and will speak with the audience. It's free and open to people living in the area. Also, poets and writers may apply to read their writing to a live audience as part of the monthly Featured Lines series. ● A photo contest for which 60 entries will be selected has an deadline of Feb. 22 and a fee of $25. Categories are portrait, landscape & architecture, and general. A 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 21 reception will be held in the University of Toledo's Center for Visual Arts, adjacent to the Toledo Museum of Art, for the 2014 juried student exhibition. All UT students were invited to enter this contest, which will be on view through March 29.

A free nature photography class, suitable for all ages, will be 10 to 11 a.m. Feb. 22 at Wildwood Preserve Metropark. The group will meet in the park's Ward Pavilion. Cameras will be provided but participants should bring an SD card. Information: WGTE.org/​family or NaturePhotoCenter.com.

A Brush with Art, a free tour for people who have early-stage memory loss, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Toledo Museum of Art. It will be followed by a discussion and an activity. Register at 419-537-1999.

The Ohio Watercolor Society's traveling show, with 40 paintings, will be at two northwest Ohio venues this winter. For part of February, it will be at the Mansfield Library (call for specific dates, 877-883-1830), and in March it will be in the Wassenberg Art Center in Van Wert (specifics at 419-238-6837).
