Nonprofit group buys the American Gallery

River Centre Foundation is purchasing the American Gallery at 6600 Sylvania Ave. in Sylvania from Toni Andrews, who owned and ran it for 19 years.
American Gallery has a new owner. River Centre Foundation, a nonprofit organization, is purchasing the business at 6600 Sylvania Ave. in Sylvania from Toni Andrews, who owned and ran it for 19 years.
David Garner, president of the foundation and owner/administrator of the River Centre Clinic for eating disorders in Sylvania, said Andrews will continue part-time for the next few months along with other gallery staff.
It will continue selling work by regional artists and will add some new ones, he said, adding that the manager will be painter Dani Fuller, who is creative art director of the foundation’s Healing Arts program.
Garner said people who complete talk-therapy for emotional issues such as eating disorders often benefit from a positive activity such as creating art. The gallery will be an outgrowth for that effort, he added.
“Initially, there will be very little difference in the American Gallery. We don’t want to disappoint American Gallery customers. We’re going to proceed slowly,” he said. “Over time, we’ll develop our own style.”

PRESSURE, a show of contemporary prints, opens with a reception from 7 to 9 pm. July 11 at LeSo Gallery, 1527 Starr Ave. Work by several artists including Aaron S. Coleman, Michael Barnes, and Janet Ballweg will be featured. Artists were selected from a national pool by printmakers Michael Weigman and Ian Welch, who wrote: “Those in our community take joy in traveling from print shop to print shop, keeping the faith and spreading the knowledge of these old traditions, while pushing them forward to be reborn in today’s contemporary art world. Each artist in this exhibition has used a form of traditional printmaking, such as intaglio, lithography, and screen-printing, yet experiments with them in a personal way that uniquely fits them into this diverse and exciting community.”
A closing reception with talks by the artists will be 7 to 9 p.m. July 25.

Kiln-formed glass (pendants, magnets, suncatchers), taught by Ann Hymel, will be 9 to 11 a.m. or 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday; concrete sculpture (planters, rocks, garden hands), also with Hymel, will be 9 to 11 a.m. or 1 to 3 p.m. July 14, and painting on a silk scarf will be taught by Sr. Sharon Havelak on July 23 in sessions starting at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

An artsy stay-cation, with a naturalist-led tour and three workshops, will begin at 9:45 a.m. July 11 at Sidecut Metropark in Maumee.
Park in the River Road lot and gather at the Lamb Center. At 10 a.m., a one-hour tour will be led by a Metropark naturalist. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., three workshops will be offered: Digital Photography Essentials with Timothy Hacker, Poetry inspired by Nature, with Frank Daniel Rzicznek of Bowling Green State University, and the Art of Zentangles, an art demo/collaborative project.
A brown bag lunch will be at 1, and from 2 to 5 p.m., people can paint outdoors, write poetry, watch wildlife, and more. The air-conditioned Lamb Center can be used until 3 p.m.
